Courses Offered by Dyal Singh College, Delhi University

Like all major colleges in the Delhi University, Dyal Singh College too offers the full gamut of undergraduate courses from B.Sc., B.Com, to B.A.

The college does not, however, offer any technical courses such as B.Tech. etcetra.

The medium of instruction is English as well as Hindi. However, finding textbooks in Hindi is difficult and you will be hard pressed to find good translations of the written material. A decent grip on the English language, therefore, is advised if you are planning on completing your undergradute education from Dyal Singh College.

The college offers both Honors (Hons.) and Pass courses in various subjects (please see list below). As a general rule of the thumb, Hons. courses are more in-depth and difficult than Pass courses, and a Hons. degree carries more weightage in the job market than a Pass degree. Therefore, it is advised to pursue a Hons. course than a Pass course in a subject of your choice.

Admissions in these courses are strictly on merit. There is no ‘first come, first served’  basis. Admissions will be carried on as long as there are deserving candidates. Besides your score in the XIIth class board examinations, your performance in extra-curricular activities (ECAs) like dance, drama, music, or sports also carries a significant weightage and can make entry into the college a lot easier.

The attendance policy is approximately 65% attendance, though the strictness of its implementation varies from department to department. Some departments and teachers are more strict in their attendance than others. It would do you good to enquire about attendance policies and strictness before you start classes.

The most prestigious courses at Dyal Singh College are B.A. (Hons) in Economics, B.A. (Hons) in English, and B.Com. (Hons). This can be said for practically every college in Delhi University as these remain the most popular courses year in, year out.

Of the science courses, the pure science courses like B.Sc. (Hons) in Physics, and B.Sc. (Hons) in Chemistry are also quite popular. Besides these, the B.A. (Hons) in Mathematics course also remains fairly popular with many students.
