The Delhi University School of Open Learning is the first, and the largest open school in India. Popularly called just “open school”, the School of Open Learning was established in 1962 with an initial batch of just 900 students. Today, over 2,00,000 students are enrolled in the school.
The Delhi University School of Open Learning has set a new benchmark for distance education in India. Keeping in mind the needs of the students enrolling in the school, admission cut-offs are kept purposefully low enough to facilitate easy admission. The main administrative house of the Open School are in the North Campus of Delhi University, easily reachable by the Delhi Metro. One can obtain both admission forms as well as deposit any relevant fees for the courses of their choice.
As per the Open School of Learning system, students are enrolled around the August-September time period. They receive their course material, class notes, lecture notes, etc. through postal mail. The students are only expected to come to the college for their exams; all other communication can take place through mail itself.
Students from all across the country are enrolled annually in the Open School. It is especially popular with students from North India, particularly the “Hindi Heartland” of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, and Haryana. A large portion of the students are also involved in some sort of vocation, and thus, the distribution of lessons through postal mail becomes very useful for them as it lets them focus on their vocation while getting an education at the same time. It is also very convenient for students who, for some reason or the other, are not able to live physically in Delhi and enrol in a regular day college.
